FAQ – ILIAS Media Portal
Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about using the ILIAS Media Portal.
Search & Filtering
Enter a search term in the search field on the home page. Suggestions will appear after three characters, which you can select directly. Press Enter or choose a suggestion to start the search.
When this option is enabled, the portal additionally searches the full text of subtitles and transcripts. This allows you to find media in which a specific word is spoken – even if it does not appear in the title or description.
Click the filter icon next to the search field to show the filter options. You can narrow results by:
- Media type – video, audio, or series
- Publication year – year of publication
Use the sort icon on the right side of the search field to order results:
- Default – relevance-based order
- Newest first / Oldest first – by publication date
- Title (A–Z) / Title (Z–A) – alphabetically
Login & Access
Certain media in the ILIAS Media Portal are only accessible to members of ILIAS courses. Logging in with your KIT account ensures that you can access the content for which you are enrolled in ILIAS.
You log in with your KIT account (u-abbreviation and password) via the KIT Identity Management. No separate credentials are required for the Media Portal.
The media displayed depends on your ILIAS course enrollment. The portal only shows you content from series you are enrolled in via ILIAS, plus publicly accessible media.
If you expect to see a specific media item, please check whether you have joined the corresponding course in ILIAS.
Click on your username in the top right corner and select "Logout". To fully log out of your KIT account, please close your browser afterwards.
Playback
Please check the following:
- Use a current browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge or Safari).
- Clear your browser cache and reload the page.
- If the issue persists, report it via “Settings” → report a problem in the player.
The modern media player controls volume, playback speed and subtitles in the control bar. Under Settings you can customise keyboard shortcuts or report a problem.
For dual-video recordings, choose the preferred layout under “View” – for example Picture-in-Picture to see the presenter and the presentation (e.g. slides or blackboard notes) at the same time.
Subtitles in German and English are available for many media items. If available, activate them directly in the player and adjust their appearance via “Caption settings”.
You can read and search the transcript on the detail page – and in full-screen mode via the corresponding tab in the side panel. Clicking a timestamp seeks the video to that position.
Yes. The video player has a fullscreen button. In full-screen mode you can show a side panel when needed and switch between its tabs – such as playlist and transcript – without leaving playback.
Personal features
Notifications in the top right alert you to new episodes, current announcements and changes. Open the bell icon to read and manage your alerts.
Use the watchlist to save videos and series for quick access later. Add media via the corresponding button on the detail page and open the watchlist in the top right.
Recently viewed media are available in the account menu in the top right under the corresponding entry. This lets you quickly return to content you opened recently.
Series
A series groups together several related videos or audio files – for example, all recordings of a lecture in one semester. All episodes are listed on the series detail page.
ILIAS Integration
In ILIAS, open a video in a series under “Content” by clicking the thumbnail or the “New Player” button – this takes you directly to the ILIAS Media Portal. Use the “To the Media Portal” button on each series to open the series in the portal. Login is seamless with your KIT account; “Back to ILIAS” lets you return to the course when needed.
The Media Portal syncs your ILIAS course enrollment at login. If you have recently joined a new course in ILIAS, please log out of the Media Portal and log back in to refresh your course memberships.
For lecturers
Media in the ILIAS Media Portal are only visible to people enrolled in the related ILIAS course. Course memberships are applied automatically at login – no separate release in the portal is required.
If you take a video, series or course offline in ILIAS, the related media are no longer visible in the ILIAS Media Portal. Once the status is online again, the content becomes available to course members once more.
No. After upload, videos are transcribed automatically and provided with German and English subtitles – with no extra effort on your part. The transcripts make spoken content searchable for students and support legal accessibility requirements.
Processing runs in the background; once it is complete, subtitles, transcript and content search become available.
A series is useful when several recordings belong together – for example all sessions of a lecture in one semester. Students then find every episode in one place, can navigate the playlist and keep an overview of the whole course series.
In an ILIAS series under “Content”, students open a video via the thumbnail or the “New Player” button – both lead to the ILIAS Media Portal. The “To the Media Portal” button on each series opens the series in the portal. Login is seamless with the KIT account; “Back to ILIAS” lets them return to the course when needed.
When the presenter camera and the presentation (e.g. slides or blackboard) are recorded in parallel, students can choose the layout in the player under “View” – for example Picture-in-Picture to see both at once. Make sure both streams are captured correctly so that the view options are available in the portal.
